Sewickley Academy receives AP School Honor Roll Platinum recognition
2 min. read
Sewickley Academy was recently named to the Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll, earning the Platinum distinction.
Why it matters: The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools with AP programs that are delivering results while broadening access to maximize college readiness.
Five thousand sixty-one schools, representing 32% of eligible schools across the United States and Canada, were named to the honor roll.
These schools include private, public, charter, and specialized high schools with small and large student bodies from rural and urban populations.
Zoom in: Only 7% of eligible schools received Platinum status. To earn Platinum, schools must meet criteria across three categories.
College Culture–80% of the graduating class must experience at least 1 AP course before graduating.
College Credit–50% of the graduating class must be able to earn college credit by receiving an AP Exam score of 3 or higher.
College Optimization–15% of the graduating class must take 5 AP courses during high school, including at least one course during ninth or tenth grade.
Reality check: Sewickley’s numbers are far above the minimum numbers, achieving 100%, 100%, and 59%, respectively, for the abovementioned criteria.
This was the Academy’s second year on the honor roll, earning Platinum status both years.
What they’re saying: “AP gives students opportunities to engage with college-level work, to earn college credit and placements, and to potentially boost their grade point averages,” said Trevor Packer, head of the AP program.
“The schools that have earned this distinction are proof that it is possible to expand access to these college-level courses and still drive strong performance—they represent the best of AP.”
Zoom out: This school year, the Academy added three AP courses, bringing the total number of courses offered to 25.
The new courses include AP English Literature and Composition, AP African American Studies, and AP Human Geography.
