Sewickley Academy recently received the 2024 College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for its AP Computer Science A course during the 2023-24 school year.

Why it matters: The award honors schools for expanding young women's access to AP computer science courses.

  • According to the College Board, schools receiving the award "have either reached 50% or higher female exam taker representation in one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female computer science exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school's female population."

By the numbers: Sewickley Academy was recognized as one of 1,153 schools nationwide, of which only 237 received the AP Computer Science A award.

What they're saying: "Computer science is the source code of our economy and much of the career landscape," said Trevor Packer, head of the AP Program.

  • "In the seven years since we began the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, it's been heartening to see schools like Sewickley Academy welcome so many more young women into this vital field."

Zoom out: Last fall, Sewickley Academy was named to the 2024 AP School Honor Roll at the Platinum level, awarded based on AP Exam performance and statistics.

  • The Academy added three AP courses this school year to bring the total to 25.
