Spotlight: This year, Groundhog Day was extra special for Jocelyn, as it was the day she reached a milestone streak of 1,000 days on the Duolingo language app. She has been studying Spanish because, “It’s one of the easiest languages for me to learn, and I was already reading Spanish books at home with my parents.” She has also had the support of Senora Bonham in the Lower School who said “her hard work has paid off and inspired others.” In order to achieve 1,000 days on the app, Jocelyn remembers that she started on April 28, 2020, when she was just five years old! It all began because her father, SA physics teacher Ben Spicer, said it was one of the apps she was permitted to use on his iPad. Jocelyn said, “I really liked doing Duolingo and kept imagining the day I’d reach 1,000 days. It would be amazing! And now I have!” To commemorate her achievement, she received a stuffed Duo (Duolingo’s owl mascot) from her parents, and her grandparents sent her a special card. Once she’s fluent in Spanish, Jocelyn says “my parents are going to take me to Spain.”
