Rob Wennemer ‘09
The Lead Story
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette subscribers may recall a familiar name gracing the bylines of their morning paper. During the summer of 2012, Rob Wennemer ’09 worked as a newsroom intern in the features department, having had over 20 articles published.
“The diversity of topics that I worked on over the course of my internship provided for a great experience,” Rob said. The Kenyon College graduate wrote a wide variety of stories on topics including public health and medicine, cultural diversity, and building design, one even commanding prime real estate on the front page. He added, “Much of this came easily for me because the Academy taught me to write and think clearly, communicate effectively, and manage multiple tasks at once.”
During the internship, Rob felt fortunate to be taken under the wings of the journalists and editors at the Post-Gazette. “Everyone was willing to answer my questions and would typically share other tricks of journalism they had acquired throughout their careers as well,” Rob said.
Standing out as one of his favorites in the long list of articles he penned was the story about a community service project executed by Stefan Lessard, bassist of the Dave Matthews Band. The goal of the project was to improve Grow Pittsburgh’s community garden at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA. “I took pride in keeping people up-to-date on the happenings of the city – a theme I hope to continue throughout my career,” he said.
