Future plans: “I want to be an artist – maybe make sculptures.”
Role model: “I don’t really have one yet.”
Favorite thing about SA: “When homeroom parents make a cool event happen from one of the projects we’re doing. We’re pretending to travel to Hawaii.”
Spotlight: Sewickley Academy students often excel in academics, athletics, or the arts. Sometimes, students like Julia take command of all three at only seven years old. Her classmates describe her as “one smart girl and very creative,” and her teacher, Mrs. Heavner, notes that “her math skills are advanced and she has grown so much as a reader.” According to Julia, she likes math, particularly learning “new ways to add and subtract,” and computer science because “it’s really fun and a challenge for your brain.” Artistically, Julia loves creating artwork at home, but feels that she “makes cooler things at school.” She initially enjoyed making pictures and then moved into sculptures, and has also been trying origami. When it comes to art, Mrs. Heavner said, “Julia always has a plan. She is a ‘thinker’ and, once she is sure what she wants her project to look like, she works quietly and molds every piece of her creation in silence.” Her art teacher, Mrs. Kraybill, adds, “Julia is full of amazing artistic ideas, and her classmates benefit from her discoveries.” Julia has also followed her parents footsteps by participating in running events, most recently completing a 5K at the Pittsburgh Marathon while her dad went for the full 26.2 miles. Her favorite part? “I got gummies every couple miles.” She also participates in gymnastics, stating that she might compete when she’s older, but right now it’s just for fun.
